Literacy Suffolk provides tutoring to adults who are out of school and over age 16, who are non-English speakers or who read and write at or below the sixth-grade level, and who need to improve basic English conversation skills. All student applicants are interviewed and evaluated. Referrals to other programs are made as needed. Tutoring is free and held at the Library for 2 hours per week.

Tutors – To become a certified Literacy Suffolk tutor, volunteers must have a high school diploma and attend a 12-hour tutor training workshop. Download an application here.

A tutor from Literacy Suffolk will help you practice English with other new speakers in an informal setting.

Adult Learner Collection
Check out English language learning guidebooks, DVDs, audiobooks and more in the library’s Adult Learner Collection. These materials can be found on the first floor of the Library.

Spanish Language Collection
Our Spanish language materials include both fiction and nonfiction titles, as well as biographies and graphic novels. The collection includes both original works in Spanish as well as works translated from English and other languages. These materials can be found on the first floor of the Library.

Important community information is available in the same area as our collection so that all Spanish language materials are accessible in one convenient location. This includes flyers and pamphlets about such topics as health awareness, driving instruction manuals, voter registration forms, absentee ballots and local housing. The collection also includes copies of the community newspapers Noticia as well as the Bilingual News.

Eastern Suffolk BOCES
Offers English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes to adults. Classes offer self-paced, small group instruction to help students improve English speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. Locations throughout Suffolk County. Call 631-286-6585 for more information.

Middle Country Central School District Community & Continuing Education
Offers English As A New Language (ENL) Program for Beginners and Intermediate/Advanced students. Beginning classes teach students basic English, while Intermediate/Advanced classes give students opportunities to study, practice and improve their English communication skills. Pronto of Long Island, Inc.
ESL Classes, Introduction to English Classes, Beginners English Classes, Citizenship Program; Located in Bay Shore, all classes are free and open to the public. Registration required. Call 631-231-8290 for more information.

Smithtown Central School District Adult Basic Education Program
Offers English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults 21 and over. Taught by New York State certified teachers and/or counselors. Smithtown residency not required. Open enrollment. Call (631) 382-2181 for more information.

Suffolk Community College
Offers instruction in listening/speaking, reading, writing and grammar to students for whom English is a second language (non-credit courses). Options include Intensive English Program (20 hours/12 weeks) and part-time English program (12 hours/12 weeks). A placement test is necessary for the Intensive English Program. If students are not able to read or write in English, they must attend an orientation before beginning the part-time program. Students may need to take a placement test before registering for classes. Students must be at least 18 years of age. Wilson Tech Career Center
