Eye Glasses
Millions living in low and middle income countries lack access to basic eye care services. The Library collects usable glasses to support a not-for-profit program. Donate eyeglasses at the drop box on the Circulation desk. Accepted are sunglasses, prescription, and reading glasses with both plastic and metal frames (no cases please).
Food
The Library’s Little Free Pantry is run entirely on donations from our community. Donate, or help yourself, to non-perishables. Donations are accepted year-round. Check here for suggested donations.
The Library has also partnered with Long Island Cares to offer a year-round community food drive. Donation boxes are located across from the Circulation Desk.
Handmade Projects
The Library accepts handmade items and donates them to local organizations. Check here for a list of project guidelines.
Laptops
RSVP Suffolk’s Community Connections Program (CCCP) accepts Windows laptops under 5 years old which they clear, refurbish, and install in the homes of financially challenged individuals. Drop off your laptop at the library and a representative of CCCP will collect it. Check here for more information.
Toys
Toys for Tots of Suffolk County each year provides a drop off box for new, unwrapped toys in the Library’s main lobby, with collection taking place in late October through mid December. This program, run by the U.S. Marine Corp Reserve, delivers a message of hope to our less fortunate youngsters.
Tree of Warmth
Each Winter, beginning on December 1 through January 31, the community is invited to drop off donations of new winter hats, gloves, mittens and scarves for both children and adults. Socks are also welcome on the tree. These items are donated to a variety of local non-profit agencies working with our neighbors in need.
The Library partners with Balloon Mission to collect balloons after people are finished using them, but before they end up as trash, causing harm to the environment, wildlife, and even us (from micro and nano-plastics). Got used balloons? Don’t toss them, recycle them! Once the fun is done, pop, and drop them off into our designated bin located in the Library lobby.
Battery Recycling
Drop off your AA, AAA, C, D, 9-volt, lithium ion, and button cell batteries at the Library. There is a collection box in the Lobby. Batteries do not need to be wrapped.
*No bags, please. Place batteries directly into the collection container.
eWaste Recycling
Each year we hold an event for safe disposal of used computers, cell phones, printers, televisions, keyboards, cables, wires, or stereos. We cannot accept canister/tube televisions, heavy appliances, microwaves, or light bulbs. Check our newsletter for upcoming collection dates.
Paper Shredding
Each year a shredding truck will be available for on-site shredding of personal documents. We cannot accept binders, plastic, cardboard, carbon paper, hanging files, newspaper, magazines, commercial papers, or wet papers. Check our newsletter for upcoming collection dates.
The Library partners with Shred-It, a certified, ecofriendly document destruction company. Drop personal, sensitive documents into the secure receptacles located in our adult department & lobby. These locked containers are regularly collected by Shred-It and the contents destroyed.
Plastic Bags & Film
Check here for a full list of acceptable items.
Prescription Drug Disposal
The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office and Sixth Precinct Police Department host prescription drug take-back events at various times throughout the year. These events offer community members a safe and secure way to dispose of unused or expired medications—no questions asked and no personal information required. Check our newsletter for upcoming collection dates.
Recyclable Glass Drop-Off Program
Drop glass bottles and jars (no lids or caps, please) into the designated glass recycling bins in the back of the Library parking lot. Reminder: glass is no longer accepted in residential curbside recycling. (In partnership with the Town of Brookhaven).
