The Comsewogue Public Library Board and staff are committed to reducing the Library’s impact on the environment, modeling green practices for our community, and committing to continuous improvement.
We are excited to share that on October 6, 2020, Comsewogue Public Library achieved certification through the Green Business Partnership. Some recent accomplishments include: installing a “cool roof” to replace the old one, installing new, more efficient HVAC units in place of the old ones, and installing an Energy Star-rated hot water heater to replace an older unit. The Library has also begun converting older lighting units to fixtures that take LED bulbs, and making it easier for the community and staff to recycle paper, metal cans, glass, and plastic on Library property. We aim to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, waste, and water use over the course of the next year.
Between now and the end of 2021, we will be working toward a Sustainable Libraries Initiative (SLI) certification through the New York Library Association. The Sustainable Library Certification Program focuses our leadership to enable our library, and ultimately our community, to become more environmentally sound, socially equitable and economically feasible. The initiative provides a proven path forward using a series of benchmarks, helping to ensure our library and community thrives in the coming years. We will continue to update you on our progress as we work toward these important and exciting goals.
The Comsewogue Public Library’s mission is to provide quality library service at a reasonable cost to our community.
